Sentencing Advisory Council

The Sentencing Advisory Council has released its annual report for the
2010-11 financial year. The report shows that the Council has had an extremely productive year.

This year, the Council:

* launched its Virtual You be the Judge, an interactive version of our popular education program allowing online visitors to assume the role of a judge in a sentencing hearing. Over 4,000 people used the program during its first six months.
* achieved significant progress towards fulfilling three references from the new government, asking us to examine baseline sentences, gross violence and parole as part of our role to provide independent, high quality research and evidence-based advice on sentencing policy.
* produced four, important new publications as part of a series on community attitudes to sentencing, incorporating results of a national public opinion survey. We also released a report synthesising previous research that shows sentences of imprisonment are only minimally effective in deterring crime.
* began a new series of reports on current sentencing practices, building on our Sentencing Snapshots series by providing more detailed statistical analyses. We also published two research reports, one containing previously unreleased data on sentencing in the Koori Court Division of the Magistrates' Court and the other on gender differences in sentencing.
* overhauled our website allowing us to deliver content in new and more effective ways. The website now includes enhanced opportunities for user feedback and better integration with social media platforms.

The Council's annual report provides a good overview of the Council's recent activities and an indication of our future direction.

As part of our ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impact, the Annual Report 2010-11 is only available via the Council's website
